Transfers ~ A solo art exhibit by Monica Angle ~ Opening Reception

These works combine techniques from painting and printmaking. I apply layers of color by transferring water color and acrylic media from glass to paper, wood or canvas. Each additional color builds on traces left by the earlier layers. These traces combine to form pathways and clearings within an image. Transfers allow changes from one place to another, and the images record the transfer of media from one surface to another.   Complimentary refreshments & cash bar

Opening Reception 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm.

He lit up the jazz world in the 1970's and 1980's and put the sounds of organ jazz back in a prominent place in jazz. The album also featured Hubert Laws, Billy Cobham, Billy Harper, and others. On organ, Gerry Youngman (of Paradigm Shift) will present the sounds of the Mighty Burner with his dynamic style of keyboard playing. Joining in this high energy concert will be saxophonist Kelly Bucheger (of What Would Mingus Do?), trumpeter Brian Freeman (of Van Taylor Jazz), drummer Darryl Washington (Grover Washington, Jr), and jazz percussionist Tony Zambito (JazzBuffalo, My Cousin Tone'). Todd Marcus Quintet

Todd Marcus’ straight-ahead playing on the bass clarinet has carved out a unique voice for the instrument in modern jazz. His music swings hard with both a fiery and introspective intensity but also maintains a strong lyrical sensibility. Washington Post writes of this Downbeat Rising Star, “Listeners won’t have any trouble recognizing Marcus’s compelling gifts for composing and arranging.” JazzTimes magazine adds, “In Marcus’ hands, the bass clarinet is no longer a specialty instrument. Its unique timbral richness becomes incisive, fully capable of forceful expression.”
Based in Baltimore, MD, Marcus actively leads various small ensembles and nine piece band The Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra on original compositions and jazz standards.

Self taught in jazz theory and composition, Marcus’ compositions draw largely on straight-ahead jazz and classical influences but over recent years have also increasingly explored the Middle-Eastern sounds from his Egyptian-American heritage. He has worked with other jazz artists such as Gary Bartz, Bennie Maupin, Don Byron, Larry Willis, Odean Pope, Gary Thomas, Joel Frahm, Tim Warfield, Ralph Peterson, Warren Wolf, Sean Jones, Xavier Davis, George Colligan, and Orrin Evans.

Marcus’ performances include national and international touring. He was a featured artist in 2017 Jazz Tales Festival in Egypt, 2015 Cairo Jazz Festival in Egypt, and in 2005 at the 1st World Bass Clarinet Convention in Rotterdam, Holland.

Marcus also Intersection of Change, a nonprofit organization addressing poverty related issues in his Baltimore neighborhood. They run a community arts program for children & adults, a recovery program for women overcoming drug addiction, an urban farm, and has achieved significant community revitalization by renovating abandoned building and vacant lots.“Mr. Marcus is probably the most inventive bass clarinetist working in straight-ahead jazz today…[and] lives in Baltimore, where he is a guiding light on the city’s jazz scene who doubles as an activist and organizer.” New York Times, August 2017

JazzBuffalo Presents: Joe Policastro Trio

The Joe Policastro Trio is a Chicago-based jazz trio led by bassist Joe Policastro featuring guitarist Dave Miller and drummer Mikel Avery. While firmly rooted in jazz, the band's open-minded, inclusive nature also brings rock, soul, funk, Brazilian, and free jazz to the surface while keeping the aesthetic of an acoustic jazz trio intact. Their third album, Screen Sounds (JeruJazz Records, August 11, 2017), is an assemblage of movie/TV music re-imagined by the trio. Both a musical tapestry and personal soundtrack, the trio has re-purposed these selections blending each member's unique voice into a unified sound while shedding new light on these musical touchstones. Other releases by the band include 2013's West Side Story Suite For Jazz Trio, and 2016's POPS!, also on JeruJazz Records.

As sidemen, Joe Policastro (Jeff Hamilton, Pat and Debby Boone, Phil Woods, Diane Schuur), Dave Miller (Clarice Assad, Patricia Barber, Algernon), and Mikel Avery (Joshua Abrams, Theaster Gates, Rob Mazurek) have shared the stage with a wide array of musicians but dedicate collectively to this trio. Whether highlighting the original music of its member, re-contextualizing modern music, or performing jazz classics of the likes of Thelonious Monk, Chico Hamilton, or Charles Lloyd, the trio readily displays its singular approach, sound, texture, and simultaneity.

Known for its eclectic taste and approach, the Joe Policastro Trio "makes the case that such musical hybridity is worth celebrating." "Policastro…is a melody-minded bassist who prioritizes group cohesion over individual displays of virtuosity." - Brian Zimmerman, Downbeat

"There are always new wrinkles to be found in the familiar. That's a political stance that seems to serve the Joe Policastro Trio well…putting alternately gritty and focused touches on songs we've come to love….Policastro and company have found their niche tapping into different breeds of treasured songs." - Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz
